Hans & Uli Setzer are the husband and wife team that run this 15 hectare estate with intelligence, charm and purpose. Their wines are on many of the top wine lists in Austria, not to mention being a house-estate for the Vienna Symphoniker Orchestra. Weingut Setzer is located in Hohenwarth, a town in Austria’s up and coming Weinviertel wine region, very close to the Kamptal & Kremstal (15 miles north of the Danube).
11.5% alc; you can swig it. I put it on the CORE LIST because it has the amazing 2010 grip and focus and the emphatic mineral, yet this is Setzer, which means it’s classic and charming and shows every attractive facet of light-bodied adorable GrüVe.
The lightest GV above the Liter, in ’14 it is lentil and then some, plus ore and even coconut milk; marjoram and salt, boxwood and basil; so light yet with such density. ~Terry Theise
Fragrant, light and sleek; dry, with a white tea, fennel and chervil profile. ~Terry Theise
Guess what? 2015 is just as wonderful here as it is everyplace else! That said, this is perhaps the lightest among this year’s Liters, though it’s wonderfully charming with its sweet hay and lentil flavors. There’s the tiniest little whisper of grassiness, but I think that is good news. ~Terry Theise
